JAMB to Penalize Underage UTME Applicants-Registrar

- JAMB will sanction underage applicants abusing the registration process.
- Over 11,500 underage candidates have registered for the 2025 UTME.
- The registration process is smooth, with no plans for an extension.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to impose sanctions on underage candidates applying for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this on Friday while monitoring the ongoing registration process across various centers in Lagos.

He revealed that out of the 780,202 candidates registered so far, 11,512 were underage, highlighting what he described as an abuse of the concession for exceptionally brilliant students below 16 years.
“We will impose some other penalty on them, making it clear that it would have been better for them to wait for their time because they are going to waste their money,” Oloyede warned.
He further expressed surprise at the high number of underage candidates registering for the examination.
“When you expect 30 to 40 underage candidates and you get 11,512, you can see the deceit. Today alone, we registered 443 underage candidates,” he stated.
Regarding the registration process, Oloyede confirmed that it has been smooth and there are no plans to extend the registration deadline.
“An extension can never happen because there is no problem. Students are registering daily in large numbers, surpassing our targets. We planned for 60,000 registrations per day, but from the third day, we started recording 80,000 to 90,000 daily,” he explained.

The JAMB boss noted that the board had already registered 782,000 candidates out of the two million expected before the 14-day mark of the five-week registration period.
With the registration moving faster than anticipated, Oloyede emphasized that JAMB remains committed to ensuring a fair and transparent admission process while discouraging any form of malpractice, including underage registration.
