The Australians threatened the Super Falcons with some half chances but it was the latter who took the lead in the 65th minute as Osinachi Ohale bundled one home from a corner. It was however a bittersweet one for the defender as she took a nasty kick to her rib, leading to her substitution.

Substitute Asisat Oshoala extended Nigeria’s lead in the 72nd minute as the Barcelona Femini striker took advantage of a miscommunication in the Australian backline to slot home superbly.

The officials gave Australia 11-minute added time to crawl back into the game but they could only get a consolation through Alanna Kennedy in the 10th minute of added time as the match finished 3-2.

The Super Falcons now need at least a point to guarantee qualification to the Round of 16. They may still go through to the knockout stages if Canada beat Australia in the final group game.
