Sanwo-Olu Directs Lagos AG To Pay N5m Compensation To Assaulted Uber Driver

The driver, who was carrying a passenger along the route, was apparently mistaken for one of the protesters.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed the state’s Attorney General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, to comply with a court ruling that granted N5 million compensation to Adedotun Clement, an Uber driver who was assaulted by police officers and state officials in October 2021.
Clement was severely tortured and pepper-sprayed by officers of the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Agency and policemen on October 20, 2021 at the Lekki Toll-Gate during the first EndSARS protest anniversary.

He was carrying a passenger to Lagos Mainland when he encountered a gridlock at the Lekki Toll-Gate during the protest. The officers subsequently removed him from his car and assaulted him.
The driver consequently sued the state government for damages and won N5 million compensation in court.
However, the government promptly appealed the judgement, causing outrage on social media.
In a social media post on Saturday, the state governor said he has directed the attorney-general to comply with the court ruling and withdraw the appeal.
Sanwo-Olu said he made the decision as a governor committed to protecting citizens’ rights with empathy.
“I recently became aware of the case involving Mr. Clement Adedotun and the judgement by the Federal High Court, and I understand the impact this legal battle has had on him,” he wrote.
“After reviewing Mr. Clement’s case, I’ve directed the Honorable Attorney General to set up a meeting and pay him the compensation awarded by the Court.
“Although the State Government has appealed the ruling, I’ve interceded in this instance in the interest of the public good, and requested that the State’s Attorney General comply with the court’s ruling.
