Judicial operations across Kaduna State came to a halt on Monday as members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) launched an indefinite strike to press for the implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary and payment of long-standing entitlements.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that from the Federal and State High Courts to the Upper Shari’a, Customary, and Magistrates’ Courts, all court premises were locked, with placards and banners reading “JUSUN Kaduna State Chapter on Strike” displayed at their entrances.

At the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court, proceedings were halted following a strike notice issued on October 23 by the union’s secretary, Nasiru Haruna.
In the notice, JUSUN accused the Kaduna State Government of neglecting several correspondences, including a demand letter dated September 1 and a follow-up ultimatum sent on October 9, 2025.
According to the union, repeated efforts to engage the government in dialogue failed, leaving the workers with no choice but to withdraw their services.

JUSUN’s key demands include the full enforcement of financial autonomy for the judiciary as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended), payment of withheld salaries for April and May 2021, implementation of consequential salary adjustments, and settlement of nine years’ arrears of a 20 percent salary component dating back to 2016.
Other issues raised by the union involve unpaid leave and transport grants covering nine years, as well as unpaid outfit allowances for judiciary personnel.
The union explained that the decision to commence the strike was finalized during an emergency meeting on October 23, 2025.

“In line with the resolution reached, all judicial activities in Kaduna State shall be suspended indefinitely. All staff are to withdraw their services effective Monday until further notice,” part of JUSUN’s statement read.
All courts and judicial units, including the High Courts, Shari’a Courts, Customary Courts, and other related offices across the state, have been directed to fully comply with the strike directive.
