The U.S. Senate has confirmed Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security, elevating the South Dakota governor to a critical position in President Donald Trump’s agenda to tighten immigration controls.
In a 59-34 vote on Saturday, Noem became the fourth appointee in Trump’s administration to gain Senate approval, joining Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defence, Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, and John Ratcliffe as CIA Director.

Noem, South Dakota’s first female governor and a four-term congresswoman, now leads the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees immigration enforcement, customs, emergency management, and cybersecurity.
“We must secure our borders against illegal trafficking and immigration, safeguard critical infrastructure from cyberattacks, and address terrorism and natural disasters,” Noem said during her confirmation hearing. She emphasized her commitment to removing criminal aliens and enhancing community safety.

Noem also vowed to tackle “homegrown terrorism” and assured lawmakers that disaster management would be free of political bias.
A staunch Trump ally, Noem’s tenure begins amid sweeping executive actions on immigration, including the declaration of a national emergency at the southern border and steps to end birthright citizenship.
Her appointment complements Trump’s broader strategy, including the role of “border czar” held by Tom Homan, who has spearheaded Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) efforts to ramp up nationwide raids against undocumented immigrants.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Noem resisted mask mandates and social distancing, earning praise from Trump for deploying National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. It remains to be seen how Noem’s leadership will align with Homan’s enforcement measures as both aim to advance Trump’s hardline immigration policies.
