The Lagos State Government has commenced plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for persons with disabilities as part of efforts to promote inclusion, improve accessibility and enhance mobility across the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the proposal was discussed during a courtesy visit by the management of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) to the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), where both agencies explored collaboration on developing and implementing the disability-friendly vehicle identification system.

Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as a major step towards achieving Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of building “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
According to him, the specialised number plates will make it easier to identify vehicles belonging to persons with disabilities, improve accessibility and support easier movement across the state.
“The specialised number plates will improve recognition, accessibility and ease of movement for persons with disabilities throughout the state. The initiative also aligns with the principles of inclusive governance,” Muri-Okunola said.
He revealed that the agency had already begun discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and would commence the necessary administrative processes while working closely with LASODA to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the meeting was convened to initiate discussions on introducing specialised number plates designed to meet the needs of persons with disabilities in Lagos.
She explained that the initiative would cover all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers.
“This initiative should cover all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers. The system will improve identification, accessibility and support for members of the disability community,” she said.
Oyetunde-Lawal added that the proposed number plates would further demonstrate the government’s commitment to creating a more inclusive society where persons with disabilities are recognised, protected and given equal opportunities.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the initiative, noting that it aligns with the Lagos State Special People’s Law, which established LASODA to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, eliminate discrimination and promote equal opportunities across the state.
