The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to improve water transportation across the state with the completion of more than 50 kilometres of channelisation works along key ferry routes under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr. Dayo Bush Alebiosu, disclosed this during the annual ministerial press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.

According to Alebiosu, the channelisation projects were designed to improve navigation on Lagos waterways, expand ferry routes and boost safety for commuters and boat operators across the state.
He explained that the intervention would help reduce boat accidents and collisions caused by submerged wrecks and other navigational hazards, while also addressing erosion and flooding challenges affecting several riverine communities.
The commissioner listed some of the completed routes to include the 14.8-kilometre Ikorodu–Mende channel in Kosofe, the Ikorodu–Agboyi route, the Five Cowries–Lekki–Lagoon–Parkview corridor, Banana Island waterways, as well as the Ilado–Ilashe–Odofin channel in Amuwo Odofin.
He added that navigation buoys had also been installed across major waterways to improve visibility and ensure safer movement of ferries and commercial boats.
Alebiosu noted that the project aligns with the state government’s plan to strengthen Lagos’ multimodal transport system through better integration of road, rail and water transportation.

The commissioner further disclosed that the government had commenced the installation of modern concrete floating pontoons at selected jetties to modernise water transport infrastructure and improve passenger experience.
According to him, the floating pontoons are safer, more durable and more efficient than traditional wooden jetties because they can adapt to changing water levels, making boarding and disembarkation easier for passengers.
He revealed that installation works are currently ongoing at Agboyi-Ketu in Kosofe, Ijegun Egba in Amuwo Odofin and Bayeku in Ikorodu, while other locations billed for upgrades include Ebute Ero, Ijede, Apa, Mile 2 and Mowo.
Alebiosu stressed that the projects would improve safety on Lagos waterways, support economic activities in waterfront communities and encourage more residents to embrace water transportation as an alternative means of movement within the state.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government to continuous investment in waterfront infrastructure aimed at unlocking the economic and transportation potential of Lagos waterways.
