Lagos State Government has expanded its welfare support programme for pensioners as part of efforts to cushion the impact of inflation and rising living costs on retired public servants.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the initiative, coordinated by the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), was flagged off in Ikeja Division and is expected to be extended to Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe divisions in the coming weeks.

Speaking during the launch of the programme, LASPEC Director-General, Babalola Obilana, said the intervention demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving the welfare and well-being of retirees across the state.
According to him, pensioners remain an important part of Lagos State’s development story, having contributed significantly to building the public service and institutions that continue to drive governance and economic growth.
“Our retirees helped lay the foundation for the public service we have today. This initiative is not only about distributing welfare items but also about appreciating their sacrifices and reassuring them that they remain valued members of the Lagos State family,” Obilana said.
He explained that the welfare programme is aimed at providing relief to retired workers who are facing increasing economic pressures due to the rising cost of living.
Obilana added that LASPEC is also pursuing wider reforms to improve pension administration, enhance healthcare support and make services more accessible to retirees across the state.

He noted that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to the prompt payment of pension benefits and the implementation of policies designed to improve the quality of life of senior citizens.
One of the beneficiaries, retired education officer Grace Akinyemi, commended the initiative, describing it as timely and helpful for many pensioners struggling with current economic realities.
The welfare programme forms part of the state government’s broader social protection strategy aimed at ensuring retirees enjoy a dignified and comfortable life after years of service.
