Despite heavy rains on Saturday, residents rallied to protest the proposed construction of the cemetery by developer Olumide Amure.
Citing concerns for their well-being and alleging that a similar attempt was previously opposed, community members questioned the motives behind the project’s sudden resumption.
In response, Commissioner for Information Gbenga Omotoso confirmed that a cemetery would not be developed at the site.
He said: “The burial ground site is sealed and no such project will be developed there, thus the people need not worry.” Natufe is located off Babs Animashaun Road in the Bode Thomas area of Surulere, mainland Lagos.
Gathering at the construction site, which is situated amidst residential buildings, a school, a church, and a bustling intersection, protesters made their stance clear through chants of “no cemetery” and other slogans.
