The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Princess Mojisola Meranda, may step down, with lawmakers David Setonji and Wale Rauf emerging as possible successors.

Meranda became Speaker on January 13 after the removal of Mudashiru Obasa, who was accused of corruption and abuse of office. However, Obasa is challenging his removal in court, arguing due process was not followed.
Lawmakers and stakeholders are considering regional representation in leadership roles. Currently, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Meranda are both from Lagos Central, while Obasa, from Lagos West, was ousted.
To balance representation, the next Speaker is expected to come from Lagos West, making Setonji (Badagry 2) and Rauf (Amuwo Odofin 2) strong contenders.
Setonji, serving since 2015, is the Chief Whip, while Rauf, in office since 2019, has built political influence within the Assembly.

A meeting was held over the weekend to discuss the leadership transition, with another meeting expected soon. Despite this, 36 out of 40 lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in Meranda on February 17, supporting her continued leadership.
The Assembly has since adjourned indefinitely, leaving room for further negotiations on the speakership position.
