The tournament, which is the first of its kind, will feature over 100 athletes from 16 clubs competing in five categories, showcasing world-class skill, precision, and sportsmanship.
A highlight of the event is the ranking of Nigerian archers, a milestone made possible through this groundbreaking gathering, as revealed by the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Aderonke Aderionye.
“At this tournament, we are going to be using the world archery regulations to score and we will be launching the ranking for Nigeria. So, all the athletes will be ranked and we will be using the rankings every year.
“As an athlete, you get better with every tournament you go into and our goal is to get Nigerians to participate in archery at the Olympics of world level. The first step is to have the best come together to compete and this is what we are doing.”
Emmanuel Oyeleke, the founder of Zen Archery, emphasized the post-tournament goals of the event, particularly the launch of the Zen Archery Sports Foundation.
This non-profit organization will focus on providing archery training opportunities for underserved youth in Nigeria, promoting inclusivity and access to the sport for those who may otherwise not have the chance to participate.
“The short-term goal for us is to develop the skill set and compete globally. To attract new talents and attract infrastructural developments as well. For the long-term goal, we will be able to show the world that Nigeria can do it. Archery has been there for ages and this is an announcement that Nigeria is coming. We are looking forward to the next two Olympics.”
Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Sports, Damilare Orimoloye, also assured of the government’s support.
“In 2023, there was a national open tournament here and two years later we are having an international tournament. It shows that the government is supporting and we will always try to improve.”
