During a meeting with the Lagos State Dredgers’ and Miners’ Association, Engr. Olowu presented awards on behalf of Governor Sanwo-Olu to mining and dredging sites that achieved 100% compliance with operational guidelines.
This gesture serves as a testament to the administration’s focus on promoting a friendly, conducive, and safe environment for Lagosians.
Engr. Olowu noted that this initiative demonstrates the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that haulage operations in Lagos State are environmentally friendly, responsible, and beneficial to all stakeholders.
Engr. Abiola Olowu emphasized the significant role that mineral resources play in the Lagos State economy, highlighting the importance of environmentally sustainable and community-friendly extraction practices.
In line with this, the Special Adviser outlined key operational guidelines aimed at promoting safety and environmental sustainability in haulage operations.
These guidelines include:
Mandatory use of tarpaulin covers on loaded haulage trucks, Prohibition of carrying wet sand, Ensuring sand is properly covered before leaving sites.
Avoidance of overloading trucks, Displaying operational rules and regulations at haulage truck garages.
Prohibiting abandoned trucks on roads, mining, and dredging sites, Properly channeling runoff water from dredging sites.
Responsibly managing oil discharges from machinery,Daily payment of haulage fees per trip
The Special Adviser said, “We recognise the significant role mineral resources play in Lagos State’s economy.
However, it is our responsibility to ensure their extraction and utilisation prioritise environmental sustainability and the well-being of our communities”, stressing that violators of the stipulated guidelines will be arrested and prosecuted.

Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources at the meeting, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe, the Director of Admin and Human Resources, Mrs. Olabisi Akinpelu, emphasised the need for compliance with legal and environmental best practices.
Similarly, the Director of the Solid Mineral Department, Geologist Emilio Cardozo, highlighted that non-compliance with the guidelines would attract severe sanctions.
