Marianne Faithfull, the acclaimed singer and actress, has passed away at the age of 78, her spokesperson confirmed.
Born in Hampstead in December 1946, Faithfull rose to fame with her 1964 hit As Tears Go By, which reached the UK top 10.

She later starred in films such as The Girl On A Motorcycle (1968) and became a cultural icon of the 1960s.
She was also known for her high-profile relationship with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, inspiring classics like Wild Horses and You Can’t Always Get What You Want.
After struggling with heroin addiction in the 1970s, Faithfull made a remarkable comeback with her 1979 album Broken English, which cemented her reputation as a groundbreaking artist.
Paying tribute, Jagger described Faithfull as “a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer, and a great actress,” saying he was “so saddened” by her passing.
His bandmate Keith Richards echoed the sentiment, expressing that he was “so sad” and would “miss her dearly.” Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood also honoured her memory, sharing photos of their time together and writing, “Marianne will be dearly missed. Bless her.”
A statement from Faithfull’s spokesperson confirmed that she “passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family.”

Throughout her life, Faithfull battled various health challenges, including bulimia, breast cancer, and emphysema from decades of smoking. In 2020, she was hospitalized with Covid-19 for 22 days, defying doctors’ expectations by surviving and releasing her 21st album, She Walks in Beauty, the following year.
Her legacy as a pioneering artist and cultural icon will continue to inspire generations to come.
