A tragic mining accident in the Dura community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, has resulted in the deaths of four artisanal miners after a mining site collapsed on Thursday night.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that the incident occurred when the ground gave way, trapping several individuals working inside the pit.

According to an aide to Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Artisanal Mining, Solomon Dung, the details of the casualty figures were confirmed on Friday. He stated that four miners were affected by the collapse.
“Three died instantly, and one other person was taken to the hospital, and unfortunately, he also died,” Dung said, underscoring the severity of the accident. A local resident, Chuwang Davou, had earlier confirmed the tragedy, noting that people were inside the pit when the collapse occurred.

The latest fatal incident sharply highlights the persistent dangers faced by artisanal miners in Plateau communities and renews calls for better safety protocols.
This tragedy comes just one day after stakeholders in the sector concluded a two-day capacity-building workshop in the state. Speaking at the event, themed “Enhancing Safety, Sustainability, and Community Development in Mining,” the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and the University of Jos emphasized the need to embrace modern mining practices.
PTDF Executive Secretary, Ahmed Galadima, and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, maintained that adherence to international standards and best practices is crucial for developing the sector and significantly reducing security issues in mining communities.
