According to security sources who spoke with Zagazola Makama, a convoy of four Nigerien military gun trucks and a Toyota Jeep, led by CPT Salifou Mono, entered Mazanya Village in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The troops reportedly fired sporadically as they crossed the border, causing panic among residents.
A combined Nigerian security team, comprising troops of Operation Fansan Yanma, police operatives, DSS personnel and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, immediately moved into the area, traced the Nigerien soldiers and escorted them back to the Danmasani Border.
The Nigerien commander later apologised for the unauthorised entry and assured Nigerian authorities that such an incident would not happen again.
Security analysts told Zagazola that the incident highlights the fragile nature of the Nigeria Niger border corridor, especially as extremist groups continue to expand their activities across the Sahel. Although Nigeria recently appointed ambassadors to deepen diplomatic engagement with neighbouring countries, experts say far stronger coordination is required, particularly in synchronising counter terrorism operations.
They noted that both countries are running large scale military campaigns against groups such as ISGS, JNIM, Boko Haram and ISWAP. Without proper collaboration, the risks of civilian harm, operational conflicts or mistaken confrontations remain high.

Analysts emphasised that clearer communication channels, shared intelligence, and harmonised border operations are urgently needed. They added that both countries must establish firm protocols for cross border hot pursuit, joint patrols and real time information sharing to prevent future incidents and strengthen security along the corridor.
