Authorities in Sabon Birni Local Council of Sokoto State have dismissed reports claiming that bandits attacked a mosque in the area, killing an Imam and several worshippers.
Eko Hot Blog reports that a media platform had alleged that the incident occurred during an overnight assault by armed men. However, the Chairman of the council, Ayuba Hashimu, described the report as completely false.

“I don’t know any mosque that was attacked, not to talk of the killing of an Imam and worshippers. The story is false,” Hashimu told reporters on Saturday.
Similarly, the member representing Sabon Birni in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Aminu Boza, also debunked the report, insisting that no such attack took place.
“I don’t know how they got their story, but it is not true. No mosque was attacked by bandits,” Boza said.
A security source, however, confirmed that troops engaged a gang of bandits who attacked Gatawa village in the early hours of Friday.
The encounter reportedly occurred near the township entrance along the Dan-Kamarawa–Gatawa axis at about 1:00 a.m.
According to the source, the bandits fired sporadically and initially met resistance from members of the local vigilance group before a military quick-response team intervened and repelled them.

Four vigilance group members sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
“The action demonstrated the proactiveness of the Nigerian Army operatives, who successfully averted a major attack on the village. The situation at present is stable and under control,” the source added.
