A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Lagos, Ushie Uguamaye, may face a 30-day extension of her service with half pay for criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
This punishment is based on the NYSC Bye-Laws (Revised 2011), which state that any corps member who is rude to a constituted authority can have their service extended by at least 30 days with reduced pay.
Uguamaye, known on TikTok as @talktoraye, recently posted a video criticizing Tinubu’s government over the economic hardships Nigerians are facing. She later claimed she received threats from an NYSC official after the video went viral.

She also shared a screenshot showing a message from NYSC officials asking her to report to the Eti-Osa Local Government office. Uguamaye said she fears for her safety because of anonymous threats she has received.
The NYSC spokesperson, Caroline Embu, was unavailable to comment on the matter.
Uguamaye’s case has sparked a debate on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concerns about freedom of speech and the right to criticize public officials.
Supporters argue that corps members, like all citizens, should be able to voice their opinions without fear of punishment, while others believe that the NYSC is right to enforce its disciplinary rules.

Legal experts have also weighed in, suggesting that while the NYSC Bye-Laws grant the organization the power to discipline members, any action taken must align with constitutional rights to free expression.
As the situation unfolds, many are watching closely to see whether the NYSC will proceed with disciplinary measures or reconsider its stance in light of public reaction.
