The Ogun State Government has declared Tuesday, February 3, 2026, a public holiday to mark the state’s 50th anniversary.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Governor Dapo Abiodun approved the holiday to enable residents participate fully in activities lined up for the Golden Jubilee celebration. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi.
According to the state government, the anniversary marks five decades of Ogun State’s political history, steady development and contributions to national growth. Residents were urged to join the celebrations peacefully and use the occasion to reflect on past achievements while looking ahead to greater progress.
Talabi said the Golden Jubilee programme includes activities aimed at honouring the state’s history, celebrating present accomplishments and charting a course for a more prosperous future. He added that the celebration provides an opportunity for citizens to reconnect with the state’s values and development goals.
Ogun State was created on February 3, 1976, and the 50th anniversary is expected to draw participation from residents, leaders and stakeholders across different sectors.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Customs Service in Ogun State has confirmed a fresh attack on its personnel by suspected smugglers along a bush path in Alapoti, Ado Odo Ota Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening during a routine anti smuggling patrol. Customs officers reportedly intercepted a group transporting foreign parboiled rice on motorcycles and seized 46 bags weighing 50 kilograms each.
As the patrol team attempted to leave the area with the seized items, they were ambushed by a mob armed with Dane guns, stones, bottles and other dangerous objects. The officers were forced to retreat to avoid casualties while security measures were activated to restore order.

Authorities said investigations have commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack, while efforts are ongoing to curb smuggling activities within the border communities of the state.
