In a statement issued in Abeokuta, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed that findings revealed the video was false, misleading and intentionally created to generate fear and panic among members of the public.
According to the police, extensive checks and field investigations confirmed that no kidnapping or banditry incident occurred along the Owode-Idiroko road or surrounding communities as portrayed in the footage.
Babaseyi said detectives later identified the suspect as one of the individuals featured in the video, leading to his arrest.
“Preliminary findings indicate that he deliberately fabricated and circulated the false narrative for attention and content creation purposes. His actions were capable of causing unnecessary public alarm, disrupting social order and undermining public confidence in the security architecture of the state,” the statement said.

The police spokesperson added that the suspect confessed during interrogation to creating and sharing the video to attract online engagement and public reactions.
He noted that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of the process.
The command condemned the deliberate spread of fake news, false security alerts and other forms of misinformation capable of causing fear, confusion and public anxiety.
It also warned individuals against creating, sharing or recirculating unverified security-related information, stressing that such actions pose a threat to public peace and security.
“The Command will continue to identify, arrest, investigate and prosecute all persons found culpable, irrespective of status or motive,” Babaseyi stated.
The police reassured residents that Ogun State remains safe and secure, urging members of the public to rely only on verified information from official channels and to continue their lawful activities without fear.
