The lying-in-state was held at the Olu Epe Palace, where dignitaries, chiefs, and members of the Epe community gathered in solemn reflection. The late king was then taken to the mosque for special Islamic prayers and later returned to his residence, where he was interred in accordance with Islamic tradition.
Leading the funeral rites, the Grand Chief Imam and President of the League of Imams and Alfas in Epe Division, Abiola Sadallah AbdulRahmon, delivered a heartfelt sermon that emphasized the king’s noble virtues and commitment to both faith and tradition.
“Oba Shefiu Olatunji was a symbol of humility and a devoted Muslim. He served his people with fairness and fear of God. Today, we pray that Allah accepts his return and grants him Aljanah Firdaus,” the Imam said.
The event became a celebration of life as tributes poured in from political leaders and stakeholders across the division.
Member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Wale Raji, who was present at the ceremony, extolled the monarch’s virtues and described his passing as a great loss to Lagos East and the traditional institution.
“He was a peaceful ruler, a bridge-builder, and a man who always prioritized the interest of his people. Epe has lost a father figure and a unifying voice,” Hon. Raji said.
Also present at the ceremony was respected community leader and elder statesman, Alhaji Okulu, who noted the late king’s role in preserving culture and promoting youth engagement.
“His reign brought stability and pride to the stool of Olu Epe. He carried everyone along regardless of age or background. Kabiyesi was a leader in the truest sense,” Alhaji Okulu remarked.
Youth leader and President of the Epe Youth Forum, Giwa Moore, also paid tribute, emphasizing the king’s openness to youth voices and inclusivity.
