The Nigeria Police Force has provided an update on the recent incident involving House of Representatives member Alexander Ikwegh and e-hailing cab driver Stephen Abuwatseya.

In a statement released on Monday, the Police confirmed that the driver has officially reported the incident at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.

They also noted that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Police is currently managing the case. Additionally, the Police urged the public to refrain from using the name or office of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others.

The statement read: “The Nigeria Police Force is aware of the incident involving Bolt driver Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, which occurred on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja. The FCT Command is actively investigating the case following Mr. Abuwatseya’s official report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.

“The Police Force also calls on the public to avoid using the name or office of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others, as such behavior undermines the impartiality that the IGP’s office upholds.”

EKO HOT BLOG previously reported that a video showing the lawmaker assaulting the Bolt driver during a package delivery at his residence in Maitama, Abuja, has gone viral online.

The driver recorded the altercation with the representative of the Aba North & South Federal Constituency from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), leading to widespread reactions from Nigerians.

In the footage, Ikwegh can be seen repeatedly slapping and insulting the driver for requesting that he come outside to collect a package.

The lawmaker deemed the request disrespectful due to his social status and threatened to make the driver “disappear” without consequences. When the driver asked for the delivery fee, Ikwegh slapped him multiple times, questioning whether the driver understood who he was speaking to. Realizing he was being filmed, Ikwegh dared the driver to capture him properly and to call the Inspector General of Police.
