The German side hit the post and created two more big chances in the first half, threatening a major upset.

However, Real Madrid, with their unique relationship with this competition, delivered an improved performance after the interval and finally came to life.

In his final game for the club, Toni Kroos set up the opener with a corner that Carvajal headed in with 16 minutes left to play.

Shortly after, England’s Jude Bellingham assisted Vinicius Jr, who punished a stretched Dortmund side.

Niclas Fullkrug, who had hit the inside of the post earlier in the game as Dortmund repeatedly broke through the Real backline.

He believed he had set up a dramatic finish with a header.

However, he was flagged offside, effectively ending Dortmund’s hopes of an unlikely comeback.

Real Madrid, the Kings of Europe, have been crowned once again.

For the first time, Real Madrid completed an unbeaten European campaign.

Along the way, they needed four comebacks, including a last-gasp turnaround against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.

And a penalty shootout victory over last season’s winners, Manchester City, in the quarter-finals. The Spanish champions wouldn’t be denied.

For Carvajal, Kroos, and their teammates Nacho and Luka Modric, this marks an extraordinary sixth Champions League win with Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, boss Carlo Ancelotti has now claimed the coveted prize five times as a head coach.

Dortmund had triumphed over Atletico Madrid and Paris St-Germain on their journey to the final.

But missed opportunities in the first half ultimately cost them here.
