Rooney Departs Plymouth Argyle After Disappointing Championship Run
- Wayne Rooney departs Plymouth Argyle after four wins in 23 Championship games.
- Plymouth sits at the bottom of the Championship with the joint fewest goals scored.
- Interim leadership named as Kevin Nancekivell and Joe Edwards take charge.
Head coach Wayne Rooney has parted ways with Championship side Plymouth Argyle by mutual consent following a disappointing run of form.
The 39-year-old former England and Manchester United star managed just four league wins and endured 13 defeats in 23 Championship matches since taking charge of the Pilgrims in May.

His tenure ends with the team rooted at the bottom of the division.
Rooney’s departure comes four months after being dismissed by Birmingham City, where a short 83-day stint resulted in nine losses from 15 games.
The pressure mounted after Plymouth’s 2-0 defeat to Oxford United on Sunday, marking their sixth loss in a nine-game winless streak.
Despite Rooney’s defiant stance against criticism, the loss proved to be the tipping point.
When appointed, Rooney was heralded as “the perfect candidate” to bring an exciting and attacking style of football.
However, under his leadership, Plymouth has struggled on all fronts, recording the joint fewest goals in the Championship while conceding more than any other club in England’s top four divisions.
