Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to lead the charge in promoting health insurance schemes in Nigeria.
During a courtesy visit by the NMA’s national leadership, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of health insurance in ensuring citizens have access to quality healthcare services.
“We need to find a way to explain to our people that health insurance is important,” Sanwo-Olu said. “Every nation or state must prioritize the health of its citizens.”
The governor noted that Lagos State recognizes the crucial role of health insurance in catering to the healthcare needs of its rapidly growing population.
He highlighted the state’s efforts to increase the number of medical doctors produced annually and establish more Primary Health Centres.
Sanwo-Olu also emphasized the need for private hospitals to join the health insurance scheme, ensuring that people have access to quality healthcare services.

Earlier, NMA President Prof. Bala Mohammed Audu commended Sanwo-Olu’s administration for its achievements in healthcare, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He requested the governor’s support for the association’s National Secretariat building project and welfare packages for doctors in Lagos State.
The NMA is committed to partnering with the Lagos State government to achieve universal health coverage and international best practices in healthcare.
The association is dedicated to advocating for facility regulation, universal applicability of standards of care, and welfare for healthcare professionals.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to establishing the University of Medicine and Allied Science to increase the number of medical doctors produced in the state.
He also emphasized the importance of including more private hospitals in the health insurance scheme to ensure citizens have access to quality healthcare services.
