The National Intermediate Games is conceived as a transition platform between grassroots sports and elite competition, a critical stage where many promising talents are often lost due to lack of structured opportunities.
By bringing together athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, the tournament aims to provide a clear pathway for development, exposure, and progression into professional sports.
Lagos was selected to host the maiden edition, a decision widely linked to its modern sports infrastructure and proven ability to successfully manage large-scale events.
The move further strengthens the state’s reputation as a leading hub for sports in Nigeria.
The LOC will be co-chaired by key government officials, including:
- Sam Egube, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor
- Mobolaji Ogunlende, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development
- Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission
The committee will oversee logistics, technical planning, and overall coordination of the Games, working closely with the National Sports Commission and other stakeholders to ensure global standards are met.

According to Lekan Fatodu, the initiative reflects a deliberate effort by the Lagos State government to invest in young talents and position sports as a viable path for economic empowerment and national pride.
He noted that the Games will leverage modern facilities and technology, ensuring a world-class experience for participants and spectators alike.
Also speaking, Bukola Olopade of the National Sports Commission expressed confidence in Lagos’ ability to deliver a successful tournament.
He highlighted the importance of collaboration between national and state sports bodies, noting that the Games could set a new benchmark for youth competitions in Africa.
The National Intermediate Games is expected to attract thousands of athletes, officials, and sports enthusiasts, while addressing a long-standing gap in Nigeria’s sports development system.
For many stakeholders, the initiative represents one of the most ambitious efforts yet to nurture young talents and build a sustainable future for Nigerian sports.
