EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigerian Senate has initiated steps to tackle the increasing migration of Nigerians abroad, popularly known as the “Japa” syndrome, by collating data on citizens in the diaspora and exploring strategies to encourage them to return home.
The Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, chaired by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), expressed concern over the trend and pledged to implement measures to strengthen the nation’s economy and reduce mass emigration.
“This committee will collaborate with relevant stakeholders to instill confidence in Nigerians, especially the youth, so they see the potential in their country rather than seeking opportunities abroad,” Akpoti-Uduaghan stated. “Patriotism is earned, not forced. We must take concrete steps to develop our economy using the energy and expertise of Nigerians in the diaspora.”
She cited countries like India, Pakistan, and Egypt as examples of nations that have successfully retained their citizens by creating attractive economic opportunities. She noted that India, for instance, became a global hub for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), providing jobs for millions of its citizens.
As part of its strategy, the committee plans to compile a database of Nigerians living abroad, categorized by country, and collaborate with international organizations to explore ways of drawing them back home.

Former committee chairman, Senator Victor Umeh (APGA, Anambra), expressed confidence in Akpoti-Uduaghan’s leadership, stating that her expertise would drive meaningful progress in reversing the migration trend. “With Senator Natasha as Chairman, I am confident that the committee will make significant strides in tackling the ‘Japa’ syndrome,” Umeh added.
