The Nigerian Senate will suspend plenary sessions later this week to enable lawmakers participate in political party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during proceedings in the chamber.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Akpabio said the decision was necessary as many lawmakers are expected to return to their constituencies for the nomination process, which could affect attendance at plenary.
He explained that while plenary will be paused, Senate committees will continue to carry out their legislative responsibilities during the period.
The Senate is expected to conclude pending legislative business before Thursday, allowing members to leave Abuja for their respective party activities.
Lawmakers were also urged to use the remaining days to finalise key matters before the suspension takes effect.
Akpabio further called on political parties to align their schedules in a way that allows lawmakers balance their legislative duties with participation in primaries.
He warned that overlapping activities could affect representation, as lawmakers may be absent from plenary sessions.
The move reflects a common practice within Nigeria’s National Assembly, where plenary sittings are temporarily suspended during party primaries to allow legislators take part in selecting candidates for upcoming elections.
