EKO HOT BLOG reports that the crisis, which reportedly erupted following the discovery of oil in the area, escalated due to leadership tussles over oil proceeds.
The tension worsened with the abduction of the traditional ruler, Igwe Oliver Nnaji, in November 2021, whose whereabouts remain unknown to date.
On Saturday, June 14, the Anambra State Commissioner for Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Anthony Ifeanya, presented a ₦15 million cheque on behalf of the governor to the President-General of Ogwuaniocha Progressives Association, Vitalis Ekweanua, during a ceremony in Awka. The event was attended by elders, stakeholders, and representatives from the affected community.
While presenting the cheque, Commissioner Ifeanya commended the community for its efforts toward peace and reiterated the government’s readiness to implement developmental initiatives in Ogwuaniocha.
Ekweanua confirmed that the community had already conducted the mass burial on April 20, 2025, and expressed deep gratitude to Governor Soludo for the financial support.
However, he lamented the dire state of the community, describing it as deserted and in ruins. “Over 90% of homes have been destroyed, schools and health facilities are non-functional, and our people no longer farm or fish due to oil spillage without compensation,” he said.
He called on the state government to rebuild critical infrastructure, restore educational and healthcare services, and construct a bridge over the Ulasi River to reconnect the area with Ihiala Local Government.

Ekweanua pledged the community’s support for Soludo’s re-election in November 2025, describing him as “God-sent.”
