EKO HOT BLOG reports that Umahi said many major federal roads in the South East were death traps before Tinubu assumed office but are now receiving massive attention, with several projects completed and others progressing steadily.
He spoke on Saturday evening during a press briefing with journalists in Enugu, attended by contractors handling various federal road projects in the zone.
The former Ebonyi State governor described Tinubu as the “Biafra” many people in the South East had long agitated for, insisting that visible infrastructural development matters more than political rhetoric.
“It is interesting to note that all the nightmares on the roads will come to an end. And who is the one doing it? President Bola Tinubu,” Umahi said.
“Will we continue to say that South-East people should be very grateful to him because that which has been expected has come to pass.
“And for me, that’s the Biafra we’re looking for. And that is President Bola Tinubu. What he’s doing in the South-East, in fact, you need to open your eyes to see what he’s doing.
“But even if you are in darkness, you will definitely feel it because the roads are probably being paved.”
Umahi disclosed that the Federal Government has banned mining activities around bridge corridors nationwide to prevent structural damage and enhance safety, adding that patrol boats and operational vehicles would be deployed for enforcement and highway surveillance. He said the Ministry of Works would support vehicle maintenance with ₦3m monthly.
He also said CCTV cameras and solar lighting installed on bridges would be extended to federal highways nationwide, revealing that the Tomei Land Bridge CCTV project alone cost ₦480m.
On ongoing projects, Umahi said the 48 kilometre Asaba Heartland Road rehabilitation, executed with reinforced concrete pavement, has recorded major progress. He added that the 17.5 kilometre bypass being handled by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation is expected to reach 50 per cent completion by April 20.
He confirmed progress on the Enugu Onitsha road, Enugu Port Harcourt Expressway and Enugu Ebonyi corridor, stressing that asphalt removal would no longer be allowed on Nigerian roads.

Responding on behalf of stakeholders, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement for the South East, Mrs Chioma Nweze, praised the projects, saying they have improved travel, boosted economic activity and restored federal presence in the region.
