EKO HOT BLOG reports that Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring for Spain from the penalty spot in the first half after Lamine Yamal was brought down inside the box. Pedro Porro doubled the advantage early in the second half to seal a deserved victory for the European champions.
Spain dominated possession for large spells of the contest and effectively neutralised France’s attacking threats, including Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise.
France’s problems deepened in the 30th minute when central defender William Saliba was forced off with a back injury and replaced by Maxence Lacroix.
Despite trailing by a single goal at half-time, France faced a daunting challenge. Only two teams in World Cup history had recovered from a half-time deficit to win a semi-final, Argentina against Italy in 1990 and Croatia against England in 2018.
French manager Didier Deschamps attempted to change the game’s momentum by introducing Manu Koné for Adrien Rabiot at the start of the second half before later bringing on Désiré Doué in place of Bradley Barcola.
However, Spain remained firmly in control, pressing aggressively across the pitch and limiting France’s opportunities. Goalkeeper Unai Simón also produced several important saves to preserve his side’s lead.
Spain eventually put the contest beyond doubt when Porro finished off a well-worked team move to make it 2-0, leaving France with little chance of mounting a comeback.
The victory sends Spain into the World Cup final, where they will face either England or Argentina on July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The result also extended Spain’s unbeaten run to 37 matches, equalling Italy’s record for the longest unbeaten streak in international football, while securing La Roja’s second appearance in a FIFA World Cup final.
