The outreach, which took place within the church premises, saw a significant turnout of individuals who came to benefit from the free services, including eye screening, consultation, medications, and distribution of reading glasses.
Speaking during the exercise, the Parish Priest of St Theresa Catholic Church, Rev. Father Gabriel Ugoje, said the initiative was part of the church’s commitment to be concern about the well-being of its members.
“Our goal as a church is not just to feed the spirit but also to care for the body. Good health is essential, and we believe access to medical services, like eye care, should not be limited by financial constraints,” he said.
He noted that many people live with undiagnosed eye conditions simply because they cannot afford a check-up or do not realize the seriousness of their symptoms.
“That’s why we decided to partner with St Mary Eye Hospital. We want our members and the community to understand that their vision matters,” he added.
Medical professionals from the hospital conducted several eye tests, including vision assessments and glaucoma screenings. Beneficiaries with mild conditions received medications and reading glasses, while those with more serious cases were referred for follow-up care.
The lead optometrist from St Mary Eye Hospital, emphasized the importance of early detection and proper eye care.
“Many people wait until their vision deteriorates before seeking help. What we are doing here today is not just about giving glasses; it’s about educating people and catching problems early,” she explained.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Christiana, a dedicated parishioner, expressed her gratitude after receiving a pair of reading glasses.
“I’ve been struggling to read my Bible clearly for months. Today, they tested my eyes and gave me glasses, and now I can see better. I’m so grateful to the church and the doctors,” she said with joy.
