The Federal Government has approved contracts worth $100 million (₦151.9 billion) for the procurement of electric buses, tricycles, and charging infrastructure in Nigeria’s North-East region.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that a statement by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the approval, which was granted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) last week. The initiative aims to deploy 10,000 electric vehicles in the region to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
According to the statement, the contracts include:
- The supply of ten 17-seater electric buses by Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited for ₦2.9 billion, with delivery expected within six months.
- The procurement of 4,000 electric tricycles from Messrs Mutual Commitment Company Limited at ₦49.6 billion, to be delivered in nine months.
- The supply of 3,000 electric tricycles by Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development for ₦37.2 billion.
- An additional 3,000 electric tricycles from Sinoma Investment International Limited.
Each tricycle will accommodate nine passengers and a driver, providing a more sustainable transport option in the region.
Furthermore, Messrs HNCEGC will supply 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs for ₦16.3 billion. Meanwhile, Messrs KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited will establish charging stations for the electric buses and tricycles at a cost of ₦8.4 billion.

The contracts will be funded by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) as part of its strategy to transition to cleaner energy sources.
President Tinubu had initially approved the procurement of electric vehicles in October 2024 and personally inspected samples of the vehicles, chargers, and batteries before the final approval by the FEC.
