Two firefighters have been hospitalised after collapsing while battling a fire that engulfed the top floor of a three-storey residential building in the Ketu-Ikosi area of Lagos State.

According to the agency, the affected property is one of a pair of twin three-storey residential buildings. On arrival, the LASEMA Tiger Squad found the top floor already engulfed in flames and immediately launched coordinated firefighting operations alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire was caused by an electrical surge from a prepaid meter located on the front balcony of the building before spreading to the upper floor.

During the operation, two personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service collapsed due to exhaustion while combating the fire.

LASEMA said the officers were promptly evacuated to the Trauma Centre using the agency’s ambulance and response vehicle, adding that both are receiving treatment and are in stable condition.

The agency confirmed that no civilian was killed or injured in the incident.

It added that dampening-down and recovery operations were ongoing to eliminate residual heat, prevent a fresh outbreak and assess the extent of the damage.

LASEMA commended the professionalism and bravery of emergency responders, particularly the Tiger Squad and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, whose swift intervention prevented the fire from escalating.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, urged residents to regularly inspect and maintain electrical installations, especially prepaid meters and wiring, to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks.

He also advised Lagos residents to remain calm during emergencies, cooperate with first responders and make use of the state’s toll-free emergency lines for prompt assistance.
