EKO HOT BLOG reports that the event, conducted by Italian World Cup winner Marco Materazzi and Swedish legend Kennet Andersson Dahlin, outlined how sixteen teams will compete for only four available European slots. Each path consists of two semi-finals and a single final, all played as one-off fixtures, leaving no room for error for any contender.
In Path A, Italy were drawn against Northern Ireland, while Wales will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina in the other semi-final. Path B features Ukraine paired with Sweden, with Poland set to face Albania. Path C pits Turkey against Romania, as Slovakia prepare to battle Kosovo for a place in the final.
For Path D, Denmark will host North Macedonia, while the Czech Republic meet Ireland in the second semi-final.
The teams were seeded based on their latest FIFA world rankings. Italy, ranked 12th, lead the top seeds alongside Denmark, Turkey and Ukraine. Poland, Wales, the Czech Republic and Slovakia occupy the next tier, followed by Ireland, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. Romania, Sweden, North Macedonia and Northern Ireland, who qualified via the UEFA Nations League route, complete the lowest tier.
How the UEFA play-off system works
The play-off lineup comprises twelve runners-up from the European qualifying groups and four additional teams that progressed through the Nations League pathway. Each group of four teams features two semi-final matches and a final. Top seeds host fourth seeds, while second seeds host third seeds. The host of each final is determined by a separate draw.

All fixtures are single-leg encounters. If a match ends in a draw after ninety minutes, it proceeds to extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout. The semi-finals will be played on March 26, 2026, while the finals are scheduled for March 31. The winners of the four finals will secure Europe’s last remaining slots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
