The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has accused Israel of a “flagrant violation” of the 2006 UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which underpins the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

The accusation comes as Hezbollah’s leader, Naim Qassem, warned that the group’s patience with Israeli violations might run out before the ceasefire’s 60-day implementation period ends.

UNIFIL reported observing an Israeli military bulldozer on Saturday destroying a blue barrel that marked the withdrawal line between Lebanon and Israel in Labbouneh.

The bulldozer also demolished an observation tower belonging to the Lebanese Armed Forces near a UNIFIL position.

“This deliberate destruction of UNIFIL property and Lebanese Armed Forces infrastructure constitutes a flagrant violation of Resolution 1701 and international law,” the peacekeeping force said in a statement.

UNIFIL called on all parties to refrain from actions, such as damaging civilian infrastructure, that could undermine the cessation of hostilities.

The November 27 ceasefire mandates the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon over 60 days, with the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers taking control.

Hezbollah is required to pull its forces north of the Litani River and dismantle military infrastructure in the south.

Despite the agreement, the ceasefire has been marred by accusations of violations from both sides. In late December, UNIFIL expressed concern about continued damage caused by Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah’s Qassem emphasized the group’s decision to remain patient for now but hinted at potential retaliation.

“We are giving an opportunity to prevent Israeli violations and to implement the agreement. This does not mean we will wait for 60 days,” he warned, leaving open the possibility of action at Hezbollah’s discretion.
