Authorities said the trend contravenes Nigeria’s currency laws and will no longer be tolerated.
The Central Bank of Nigeria described the practice as an abuse of the national currency, stressing that folding, spraying or reshaping banknotes for gifts and social events amounts to defacement of legal tender.
“The naira is a symbol of our nation and must be treated with respect,” the bank said, adding that using banknotes as decorations undermines their dignity and value.
The government warned event planners, vendors and individuals involved in such displays that they risk arrest and prosecution under existing regulations.

Security agencies and regulatory bodies have been directed to monitor parties, weddings and other celebrations where cash spraying and money-themed designs are common.
Officials urged Nigerians to opt for alternative Valentine’s gifts such as flowers, greeting cards and packaged items, emphasising that celebrations should not come at the expense of the nation’s currency.
