The Lagos State Government has warned transport unions and associations against the illegal use of “union stickers” as substitutes for valid vehicle registration numbers, insisting that any vehicle found with such identifiers will be impounded.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the directive was issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, who described the practice as unlawful and a threat to public safety.

Musa also announced new safety regulations for courier and dispatch operators in the state, mandating the use of reflective jackets, tapes, or markers for riders operating between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.. He explained that the measure was aimed at reducing the risk of nighttime accidents.
“All courier companies must sensitize their riders and ensure full compliance,” Musa said, warning that enforcement agencies such as the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) would impose strict penalties on violators.
Similarly, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the use of union stickers in place of registration plates, describing it as a serious security risk and a violation of state laws.

He emphasized that all vehicles operating on Lagos roads must be duly registered with government-approved agencies, noting that unauthorized identifiers compromise law enforcement and public safety.
“Any vehicle discovered navigating the roadways under the guise of union sticker identifiers, or other unauthorized symbols, shall be impounded, and the owners sanctioned under the law,” Bakare-Oki warned.
