A middle-aged housewife, Umma Bashir, has approached a Sharia Court in Kaduna State, accusing her husband, Bashir Ibrahim, of renting out her bedroom without her consent and leaving her and her children with inadequate living space.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the matter was brought before Sharia Court II sitting at Magajin Gari, where Umma alleged that her husband reassigned her belongings to the sitting room and rented out the bedroom she occupied.

According to her, she had travelled to visit her parents for five days and returned home to find her bedroom locked and occupied by a tenant.
“When I confronted my husband, he told me it was his room and that he had the right to do whatever he wished with it,” she told the court.
Umma said her husband had initially allocated two rooms to her and her two children, but she was left with only one room after the bedroom was rented out.
She further claimed that her two co-wives each lived in separate two-bedroom apartments with their children, while she was expected to manage with a single room.
The complainant informed the court that she would not return to the matrimonial home unless her husband provided suitable accommodation for her and her children.
In his defence, Bashir Ibrahim admitted renting out the room but denied carrying out the action without informing his wife.
He told the court that the rent generated from the room would be used to renovate another apartment where he intended to relocate her.
According to him, he had already communicated the plan to his wife before she travelled.
After hearing both sides, the presiding judge, Malam Musa Sa’ad, stressed that providing adequate shelter remains a fundamental responsibility of a husband.
The judge noted that it was inappropriate for a couple and two teenage children to live in a single room and ordered an inspection of the property before further proceedings.

The case was subsequently adjourned for the court to assess the living conditions at the residence.
