Organised by Equitable Planning Consult in partnership with Dr. Olayinka Agunloye, an Associate Professor at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the event took place on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the palace of His Royal Majesty, Oba AbdulRasaq Akanni Musa, the Orijeru of Igbooye Kingdom.
With the theme “Towards a Drug-Free Society: Safeguarding the Youths for a Better Future,” the sensitisation programme aimed to curb the rising menace of drug abuse by empowering young people with awareness, discipline, and resilience to resist social pressure.
Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Lanuwa, Deputy Controller of the NDLEA, Lagos Command, highlighted the alarming rise in substance abuse among youths and its devastating impact on families, schools, and communities. He urged participants to serve as change agents, spreading the message of a drug-free lifestyle and seeking support when faced with challenges.
Students, teachers, and youth groups from across the area participated actively, including representatives from Igbooye Community Senior and Junior High Schools, St. Paul’s Primary School, Igbooye Local Government Primary School, and the Igbooye Vocational Training Centre. Interactive sessions allowed students to share personal experiences and express their resolve to live responsibly.
In his royal address, Oba AbdulRasaq Akanni Musa commended the organisers for bringing the sensitisation to his domain and stressed the importance of continuous education to protect the moral and physical wellbeing of the youth.
“Our future depends on the soundness of our youth. We must all say no to drugs and protect our community from this silent destroyer,” the monarch declared.
The Olisa of Igbooye, Chief AbdulBariu AbdulQuadri, also praised the initiative, noting that collective efforts involving families, schools, and community leaders remain the most effective way to combat drug abuse and its damaging consequences.
Observers described the event as both timely and impactful, reflecting a growing recognition that the fight against drug abuse requires collaboration — uniting government agencies, traditional institutions, and the grassroots.
The sensitisation ended with a renewed community pledge to promote a safer, healthier, and drug-free future for the younger generation.
