Barring any last-minute changes, the House of Representatives will decide on 87 proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution in December.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the amendments cover devolution of powers, local government autonomy, judicial reforms, state police, and socio-economic rights.
Speaker of the House, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, announced this on Tuesday during plenary. He assured that the approved amendments would be transmitted to State Houses of Assembly before the end of December for concurrence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abbas described the recent national public hearing on constitutional amendment as successful and widely attended. He said the outcome reflected public interest and support for the ongoing constitutional reforms.

He explained that the House would complete electoral reforms early enough to strengthen the electoral process.
According to him, the changes will help reduce violence, improve access for persons with disabilities, set clear timelines for resolving disputes, and make elections less expensive and more transparent.
Abbas said the Reserved Seats Bill for women remains a top priority. He emphasised that increasing female representation will strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and global reputation.
On security, the Speaker revealed that the House would take decisive action on creating state police. He stated that discussions on multi-level policing must shift from theory to practical legislative action.

Abbas proposed devolving the recruitment and training of community police officers to state governments under federal supervision. He said this would improve local responsiveness while maintaining national coordination.
The Speaker also restated the House’s focus on economic recovery and job creation. He noted that small and medium enterprises face major challenges such as unreliable electricity and poor access to credit.
He said the House would support policies that implement the Startup Act, promote renewable energy, and create opportunities for investment and innovation.
