- The alleged endorsement was unilateral
- the National Chairmanship position would be zoned to the North
- North West has not met to agree on any person for the position
Ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention scheduled for November, party leaders from the North West zone have rejected the endorsement of former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as the region’s consensus candidate for National Chairman.
Eko Hot Blog reports that PDP National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, told journalists in Abuja that the alleged endorsement was unilateral and did not represent the collective stance of North West stakeholders.

On Wednesday, the Chairman of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, had announced Turaki’s adoption on behalf of Northern leaders and PDP governors, while stating that other aspirants remained free to contest.

The party had earlier resolved during its August 25 National Executive Committee meeting that the 2027 presidential ticket would go to the South, while the National Chairmanship position would be zoned to the North, later narrowed to the North West.
However, Bature clarified that the North West zone never held a meeting to reach a consensus on Turaki’s candidacy. “The North West has not met to agree on any person for the position. We are the strongest zone in the PDP, and we were not consulted before this announcement,” he said.

He further emphasized that consensus must be achieved through genuine dialogue, not imposition. “If it’s meant to be an open race, then others should be allowed to contest freely. No zone should dictate a candidate for us without consultation,” Bature added.
He confirmed that the zone would soon unveil its own preferred candidate.
Those present at the meeting included former National Secretary Ibrahim Tsauri, former governorship candidate Isah Ashiru Kudan, and Mustapha Lamido, son of ex-Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, among other North West PDP stakeholders.
