EKO HOT BLOG reports that the school’s administrator, Rev. Fr. Chidiebere Ughaerumba, had on Thursday announced the plan to name the five-storey building after Obi in appreciation of his long-standing support for the institution. The announcement was made during the former governor’s visit to the school, where he was commended for his numerous contributions to its growth since his time in office.
However, Obi, who was also the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, firmly rejected the proposal, stating that he does not support naming public structures after himself or his family members.
“I’m against such plans. When I was governor, every community wanted to give me a chieftaincy title, but I rejected it. Even the school where I studied wanted to honour me with a doctorate title. I was also offered a national award but said it should wait until after my tenure. Even local government chairmen wanted to name streets after me, and I said no,” Obi said.
He explained that his focus is on using his personal resources to support educational and health institutions rather than seeking personal recognition.
“This week alone, I have visited five schools and donated between ₦5 million and ₦15 million each. I can use that money to buy a new car or host a party, but I prefer to invest in education and healthcare,” Obi added.
During the visit, Obi presented a cheque of ₦15 million to the college, reiterating that his contributions to such institutions are part of his commitment to building a better society.
