The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sealed several plazas, malls, and illegal market structures along the Ojuelegba axis and Tejuosho Main Market for violating environmental laws, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Bayo Mogaji, Head of Department for the Lagos/Badagry Axis, announced the action on Thursday, noting that the closures followed repeated instances of indiscriminate waste disposal on roads, medians, and open spaces.

“The habitual conversion of roadsides, drainage channels, and public spaces into refuse dumps not only disfigures the cityscape but also poses serious public health risks and increases flood vulnerability,” Mogaji said.
Quoting LAWMA Managing Director and CEO, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Mogaji described the indiscriminate dumping as an affront to Lagos’ status as a megacity, adding that the Ojuelegba–Tejuosho corridor, one of the city’s busiest commercial and traffic hubs, cannot be allowed to descend into environmental anarchy.

He emphasised that the intervention aims to restore environmental order, civic discipline, and communal responsibility. The closures will remain in effect until the affected areas are fully cleared of waste and traders and businesses comply with environmental regulations.
LAWMA, working alongside the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and other regulatory agencies, said surveillance and enforcement operations will continue across markets, highways, and residential areas. Violators of environmental laws will face appropriate sanctions.
“Enforcement will remain continuous and uncompromising as long as a minority of residents, traders, and commuters persist in flouting state environmental laws,” Mogaji added.
