During the inauguration on Tuesday, Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, described the initiative as a strategic investment in human capital development, social inclusion, and regional stability.
Professor Ahmad emphasised that bilingual education strengthens foundational learning, improves communication, preserves cultural identity, and enhances global competitiveness. She added that the initiative aligns with the government’s education transformation agenda under the Renew Hope programme of President Bola Tinubu, prioritising access, equity, knowledge, and skills development.
“One of the key benefits of bilingual schools is that students gain both religious and secular knowledge without compromising either,” the minister said. “Proficiency in multiple languages empowers students to communicate effectively, access wider knowledge resources, and participate confidently in their communities and beyond.”
She also noted that the school provides a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment to promote continuity, quality, and high educational standards.

Speaking at the event, UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr. Aisha Garba, said the bilingual schools teach students in both English and Arabic.
Dr. Garba highlighted that the curriculum focuses not only on reading and writing but also on practical skills through Technical and Vocational Education, ensuring students gain knowledge applicable to real-world contexts. She urged Kano State government and local communities to take ownership of the school to ensure the sustainability of the project.
Representing the state government, Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Umar Faruq Ibrahim, commended the Federal Government and IDB for intervening to address out-of-school children.
He noted that the new facility complements Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s emergency education initiatives, which include:
- Supply of over 2,000 textbooks covering core and non-core subjects
- Construction of 1,740 new classrooms and upgrading of 5,800 existing ones
- Establishment of a new library to enhance learning infrastructure
Alh. Ibrahim emphasised that these investments will create an inclusive, modern educational environment for Kano’s children.
The Bilingual Education Model School programme reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to boosting access, equity, and skills development in basic education while addressing the persistent challenge of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
By integrating bilingual instruction, technical skills training, and modern educational facilities, the initiative seeks to produce well-rounded, globally competitive students who can thrive in both local and international contexts.
