Stakeholders from Makoko, Sogunro and Oko Agbon communities in Lagos State have reached an agreement with the state government to set up a 10-man committee to carry out a self-enumeration of buildings affected by recent demolitions.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the committee is expected to complete its assessment within two weeks and submit a report to the Lagos State House of Assembly Ad hoc Committee on Rules and Business. As part of the resolution, affected residents were advised not to rebuild any demolished structures until further notice.

The decision was among five key resolutions reached during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja.
The parties also agreed that any regeneration of the Makoko communities would be carried out without displacing residents. In addition, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Geographic Information Service (GIS), Dr Olajide Babatunde, pledged to provide an auto-photo clearly indicating the demolition boundaries within one month.
Speaking after separate meetings with community representatives and government officials, the Majority Leader of the House and Chairman of the Ad hoc Committee, Hon. Noheem Adams, urged all stakeholders to comply strictly with the resolutions.

He emphasised the importance of transparency in the self-enumeration exercise, noting that the data generated by the community would be cross-checked with existing government records. Adams also directed the stakeholders to formally submit the list of the 10-man committee to the House once constituted.
According to him, the proposed Water City project by the state government is designed to improve living conditions and directly benefit affected residents.
Earlier, Dr Babatunde stated that plans for the Water City project had been finalised as part of broader efforts to regenerate the area. He said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is concerned about overcrowding and substandard living conditions in the communities and assured residents that compensation would be provided where necessary.
Community leaders, including the Baale of Sogunro, Chief Abraham Mesu, and the Baale of Makoko Waterfront, Chief Emmanuel Shemade, acknowledged the challenges posed by the demolitions but expressed readiness to work with the government.
Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, Bayo Adefuye, commended the House of Assembly’s intervention, describing the Water City project as a landmark initiative aimed at improving residents’ quality of life while ensuring they remain the primary beneficiaries.
