Seventeen individuals have been convicted by a Lagos Magistrate Court for engaging in open defecation and urination in public spaces.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government disclosed the development on Saturday via its verified X account, stating that the offenders were apprehended by the Lagos Waste Management Authority.

According to the statement, the individuals were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi. The court convicted the defendants and imposed a fine of ₦40,000 each, with an alternative sentence of one month’s imprisonment.
The government said the arrests form part of ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at curbing environmental violations and improving public sanitation across the state.

In its statement, the state authorities described open defecation and urination as unacceptable practices that degrade public spaces and undermine Lagos’ status as a megacity.
Officials reiterated their commitment to enforcing environmental sanitation laws, warning that defaulters would continue to face prosecution.
Residents were also urged to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in their communities, with the government emphasising that environmental sanitation is a shared civic duty.
