Eko Hot Blog reports that the approval was announced during a successful meeting of the National Space Council held at the State House, Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
The centre, operated by the National Space Research and Development Agency, will now bear the name of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in recognition of his administration’s support for the advancement of space science and technology in Nigeria.

President Tinubu, who serves as Chairman of the National Space Council, was represented at the meeting by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who also chairs the Council.
Leading the NASRDA delegation was the Director-General, Matthew Olumide Adepoju, alongside key directors of the agency.
The team expressed appreciation for the approval, describing it as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s space development journey.
Speaking after the meeting, Dr. Adepoju described the decision as a landmark moment for the agency and the nation’s technological growth.

“This approval is a monumental step in recognizing the contributions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Nigeria’s space programme and technological advancement,” he said.
Also reacting, the Director of Space Regulation and Spectrum Management at NASRDA, Aiyeola Sikiru Yommy, commended both the President and the Director-General for what he termed a groundbreaking achievement.
“The renaming of the Centre is a historic development for NASRDA and a fitting honour for a leader whose support for science and innovation continues to inspire progress,” Dr. Yommy stated.
He further disclosed that the approval of a robust staff regulation and condition of service for NASRDA personnel was another major outcome of the Council meeting.
“We are truly grateful for these progressive decisions, and I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to our Director-General for his exceptional leadership. His efforts continue to drive the agency toward greater heights,” he added.
The renaming of the Epe-based facility underscores Nigeria’s growing investment in space research and its ambition to strengthen its position in the global space ecosystem.
Observers note that the development signals renewed federal commitment to leveraging science and technology for national development.
