The advisory specifically highlights risks associated with the US Embassy in Abuja, the Consulate General in Lagos, and several American-affiliated schools.
While the embassy did not explicitly name the groups behind the threat, the warning comes at a time of extreme geopolitical volatility.
The alert follows recent military actions by Washington and Israel against Iran, including strikes that reportedly led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and his wife, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh.
In Nigeria, these international events have already triggered domestic unrest. Members of the Islamic Movement have held protests in Lagos and various northern states to denounce the strikes.
Additionally, the security situation remains complex following President Donald Trump’s controversial Christmas Day order for bombings in Nigeria, which he claimed targeted jihadists protecting persecuted Christians,a move that sparked significant debate over foreign military intervention on Nigerian soil.

To mitigate risks, the US Embassy has provided a list of safety protocols for its nationals. Citizens are encouraged to vary the timing and routes of their daily travels to avoid becoming predictable targets.
The notice also emphasizes keeping mobile phones fully charged, staying alert in crowded public places, and avoiding any demonstrations or large gatherings.
“Be aware of your surroundings, keep a low profile, and familiarize yourself with emergency exits when entering buildings,” the statement read.
The embassy further advised US citizens to review their personal security plans and maintain communication with family and colleagues regarding their whereabouts.
As security agencies in Nigeria monitor the situation, the alert serves as a stark reminder of how global conflicts can ripple into local security concerns, placing diplomatic and civilian institutions on high alert.
