EKO HOT BLOG reports that the extension is targeted at tertiary institutions that formally requested additional time to allow their students participate in the programme.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Strategic Communications at NELFUND, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.
According to the statement, the decision followed appeals from some institutions seeking more time for eligible students to finalise their applications.
“The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has approved an extension of its Student Loan Application Portal for institutions that have formally requested additional time for the 2025/2026 academic session,” the statement read.
NELFUND explained that the extension will provide students in the affected institutions with another opportunity to complete their application process through the official portal.
Commenting on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring that eligible Nigerian students benefit from the financial support provided under the scheme.
He said the programme was created to remove financial barriers that prevent many students from pursuing higher education.
“NELFUND remains committed to ensuring that eligible students across participating institutions have the opportunity to access the student loan programme,” Sawyerr said.
The Fund urged students in the institutions affected by the extension to take advantage of the additional window to complete and submit their applications.
NELFUND also stressed that all applications must be completed through the official portal to allow proper processing and verification.
The agency reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability in the administration of the student loan scheme. The student loan initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to expand access to higher education, especially for students from low income families.
The scheme is administered by NELFUND following legislation signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in April 2024. Under the programme, students in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria are eligible to receive interest free loans to cover tuition and other educational expenses.

Beneficiaries are expected to begin repayment after completing their studies and securing employment. Officials say the initiative is designed to reduce financial pressure on students while promoting broader access to tertiary education in the country.
