The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Olabisi Onabanjo University has accused officers of the Nigerian Police Force of assaulting student leaders and firing shots during a protest at the Oru-Ijebu Police Station in Ogun State.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the incident has sparked conflicting accounts between the students and the police.
While the Ogun State Police Command denied the allegations, insisting no student was detained, the SUG maintained that its members were attacked during what it described as a peaceful intervention.

In a statement jointly signed by SUG President Kehinde Bamigbose and General Secretary Olajire Emmanuel, the union said the situation began after reports that some students had been arrested under unclear circumstances.
According to the statement, the union’s Legal Director visited the police station to verify the situation but was allegedly assaulted by officers while carrying out his duties.
The union claimed the official was physically attacked and subjected to degrading treatment, while another student at the scene was also reportedly assaulted.
It added that when the SUG leadership later arrived at the station to calm tensions, the situation escalated.

The union alleged that officers responded with force, leading to injuries, arrests, and widespread panic among students and bystanders.
Among the claims made by the SUG were that a student sustained an injury during the incident and several others were assaulted or detained.
Describing the situation as an abuse of power, the union called for a thorough investigation, accountability for those involved, medical support for affected students, and the release of any detained individuals.
However, the police have maintained that the allegations are unfounded, setting the stage for further scrutiny into what transpired at the Oru-Ijebu division.
